A recent study of a group of men with erectile dysfunction, found that they had a low risk of having a heart attack in the future, according to an interview conducted by the researchers, Professor David Brown of the University of Oxford.
“This is an important finding, but we have to acknowledge that this finding is very strong,” Professor Brown said. “We are trying to understand the mechanisms behind the increased risk of a heart attack and other related health issues and the possible benefits of using a heart test to help the general population.”
Dr Brown said that he was “convinced” that men with ED have a lower risk of having a heart attack and that this would help them to plan for the future.
“We have looked at data from the UK and have found that men who take nitrates for chest pain have a slightly higher risk of a heart attack than men who don’t take nitrates,” he said.
“A heart test can help to determine whether a man has a heart attack or another medical condition that he may have, so we have already considered whether men with ED may have a more serious risk of a heart attack and also other health issues,” Dr Brown said.
In the study, Dr Brown compared men with ED who were prescribed Viagra (sildenafil citrate) with men who were given a placebo. The results showed a significant difference in the risk of heart attack between the two groups, with the risk for men who were prescribed Viagra higher than the placebo being lower than that of the men who were given a placebo.
“The increased risk of heart attack is probably a result of the increased blood flow that comes from the penis,” Dr Brown said.
“It is thought that nitrates can cause an overproduction of the heart’s cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) which leads to an increase in the production of nitric oxide.”
Dr Brown said it is important to note that patients who take nitrates for chest pain can have a higher risk of developing a heart attack, and a higher risk of having a heart attack if they have ED. In addition, the cardiovascular side effects of nitrates include a headache, dizziness, fatigue, flushing, and muscle pain.
“This study is of great value as it shows that the combination of nitrates and sildenafil can increase the risk of a heart attack by about 25%, which is an important finding,” he added.
“We also need to note that the study did not compare Viagra with any other ED medications such as Cialis (tadalafil), Levitra (vardenafil) or Stendra (avanafil). These drugs are only effective for erectile dysfunction, and they are only one of the drugs that are prescribed for this purpose.”
Dr Brown is a professor of clinical medicine at the University of Oxford. He has also been on the UK Medical Board, where he is a member of the General Medical Council, the General Medical Council of England and the General Medical Council of Wales.
